Background: Forensic identification of the lives or dies person can use different techniques that involve various methods of support such as cheiloscopy and palatoscopy which are unique and show individual variation. Although there are many studies with these two methods, but a study comparing the two methods together to the reliability in the determining sex is minimal. Purpose: This aim of this study was to know the distinction of reliability of lip prints pattern and palatal rugae pattern. Methods: This study using 68 samples (34 males and 34 females) students of Dentistry, Airlangga University with age range of 21-30 years old, by taking lip print with lipstick and taking palatal rugae pattern with irreversible hydrocolloid material. Results: Reliability of lip prints pattern is K=0,834 (very good), while reliability of palatal rugae pattern is K=0,593 (medium). Analysis Chi-Square test of the lip prints pattern obtained p-value of 0,509 (I-Ia); 0,252 (I-II); 0,525 (I-III); 0,308 (I-IV); 0,017 (I-V); 0,706 (Ia-II); 0,005 (Ia-III); 0,063 (Ia-IV); 0,001 (Ia-V); 0,010 (II-III); 0,052 (II-IV); 0,002 (II-V); 0,795 (III-IV); 0,090 (III-V); 0,165 (IV-V), while the palatal rugae pattern obtained p-value of 0,274 (wavy-circular); 0,378 (wavy-curved); 0,453 (wavy-straight); 0,360 (straight-circular); 0,287 (straight-curved); 0,157 (circular-curved). Conclusions: The reliability of lip prints pattern is higher than the reliability of palatal rugae pattern. There are differences between lip print pattern (type I and V, Ia and III, Ia and V, II and III, II and V) and there is no difference between palatal rugae pattern at Airlangga University dental students.
